Overview of Skillset Requirements:
The Sonography Department at Bassett Medical Center provides high-quality ultrasound imaging services with a focus on both general and specialized vascular studies. Sonographers here are expected to have strong skills in general and vascular ultrasound, with experience in interventional radiology (IR) preferred. The team at Bassett Medical Center operates within an IAC-accredited Non-Invasive Vascular Lab, requiring sonographers with advanced knowledge and proficiency in a range of diagnostic vascular studies.
On-Call and Shift Expectations:
On-Call Rotation: Sonographers participate in a rotating call schedule, which includes:
o 1 weekday evening on-call every other week
o 1 weekend on-call approximately every fifth week
The call schedule is shared among a team of five technicians to ensure 24/7 coverage.
Sonographers may occasionally be required to provide services at additional Bassett locations,
including hospital sites, outpatient clinics, and outreach centers.
Required Technical Proficiencies:
Bassett’s sonographers must demonstrate independent proficiency in performing ALL of the following vascular ultrasound studies:
Upper and lower extremity venous duplex studies
Upper and lower extremity arterial duplex studies
Carotid duplex studies
Bypass graft studies
Mesenteric artery duplex studies
Renal artery duplex studies
Upper and lower extremity vein mapping duplex studies
Fistula flow studies
Venous reflux studies
Required Certifications: ARDMS
Preferred Certification:
While certification as an RVT (Registered Vascular Technologist) is preferred, all sonographers are expected to be well-versed in the requirements of an IAC-accredited vascular lab.
Assessment and Competency Requirements:
Candidates considered for sonography positions should demonstrate high levels of competency, proficiency, and frequency across the full range of vascular and general ultrasound studies. Profiles should include competency scores and detailed experience for each study type to assist in assessing alignment with department standards.
