POSITION SUMMARY
The Ultrasound Transducer Design Engineer leads and contributes to the design, modeling, prototyping, and validation of advanced and innovative ultrasound transducers, arrays and probes.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Design and develop high performance ultrasound transducers for imaging, therapy or NDT applications.
- Conduct simulations for acoustic, electrical, and thermal performance analysis.
- Select and qualify piezo materials, backing, matching layers, and lens components.
- Define acoustic stack architecture and lead the prototyping and testing phases.
- Operate test equipment to establish performance data, conduct experimental tests, and evaluate results.
- Perform acoustic characterization using hydrophones, impedance analyzers, and pulse-echo system.
- Drive root cause analysis and continuous improvement of performance and yield.
- Research new and emerging technologies for ultrasound applications for both medical and non-medical products.
- Interact with vendors and customers on transducer design projects.
- Work with the Product Development team to ensure that designs comply with acoustic design standards.
- Work with Process Engineering to ensure that design changes comply with acoustic design standards.
- Ability and knowledge to operate within a regulated industry i.e Medical Devices
- Coordinate assigned work tasks with other personnel within the department, as well as personnel in other departments to ensure the smooth and efficient flow of information and project completion.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Master’s Degree in relevant field required; Ph.D. is a strong plus.
- 5 years or more experience in ultrasound transducer design and development
- Hands-on experience in acoustic and ultrasound transducer design, characterization and materials selection
- Strong analytical and experimental skills in transducer prototyping and testing
- Familiarity with medical device standards and regulatory constraints (i.e., IEC 60601, ISO 13485, FDA 21 CFR, IEC 60601-2-37) is a plus.
- Understanding of acoustics physics, piezoelectricity, transduction, ultrasound imaging is a plus
- Ability to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as customer reports, specifications, and government standards.
- Proficiency with acoustic modeling software, and the Microsoft Suite of software
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to solve problems and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
- Must excel at working in a team environment.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams
