Echocardiographer Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Cardiologist, DI Administration and/or Lead Ultrasonographer performs a variety of technical procedures that require independent judgement, ingenuity and initiative in the application of non-ionizing, high frequency ultrasonic waves to patients for diagnosis of disease.
Echocardiographer Job Responsibilities:
- Move transducer, by hand, over specified area of body and observe sound wave display on screen to monitor quality of ultrasonic pattern produced.
- Key test data and patient information into computer of U/S equipment to maintain record of test results.
- Discuss test findings with the radiologist/cardiologists.
- Explain procedure to the patient. Instruct and assist patient in assuming physical position for exam
- Set, adjust, manipulate, control and maintain a variety of complex electronic equipment to apply non-ionizing, high frequency ultrasonic waves to patients for diagnosis of disease.
- Responsible for the procurement, storage, and routing of supplies and for room preparation.
- Analyze patient's general body size, thickness, general physical condition, age and suspected pathology to produce ultrasound exams of high quality.
- Acquire images of organs shown on display module, or remove strip printout from equipment, to obtain permanent record on internal exam.
- Communicate with referring physician regarding patient's previous history as needed.
- Responsible to recognize whether the necessary information has been acquired for interpretation and discuss findings with the radiologist.
- Responsible for reviewing Physician order/requisition.
- Responsible for reviewing department order vs. ordering requisition for accuracy prior to performing the exam.
- Make sure all charges are appropriate for the exam that is performed, and tracking is completed.
- Mediate individual problems and refer to supervisor those unresolved problems.
- Assist in ancillary departments when necessary.
- Perform clerical duties as required.
Echocardiographer Education and Experience Requirements:
- Completed 2 years at an accredited medical imaging school.
- CPR – Current AHA Healthcare Provider Certification / equivalent within 3 months of hire is required.
- Attended an approved school for Diagnostic Ultrasound or have equivalent experience which is accepted by the American Society of Ultrasound Technologists or the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) or American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) is also required.
- Within 1 year of the first day of employment, employee must successfully obtain full ARDMS and/or CCI certification (including Physics and an additional anatomic specific registry).
- Must earn 30 CME credits every three years as required by the Ultrasound registry.
- 1-2 years working in an Ultrasound environment preferred.
- Experience with doppler, stress and trans-esophageal echocardiography and exams under the direction of the Senior Ultrasonographers and Lead Ultrasonographer.
Echocardiographer Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- High degree of technical aptitude with an in-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
- Knowledge of computer keyboard, programs and menus.
